Cinque Terre
The Cinque Terre is a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera. It is in the Liguria region of Italy, and is located to the west of the city of La Spezia. The coastline, the five lands, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. "The Five Lands" is consisted of five villages namely, Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.
Over the centuries, people have carefully built terraces on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the sea. Transport are brought about with the help of specific paths, boats and trains which also connects the villages while cars cannot reach them from the outside.
The Cinque Terre area is a very popular tourist destination.
Torrential rains caused floods and mudslides on October 25, 2011, which affected these areas severely. Nine people killed by the floods, and the villages Vernazza and Montersso were extensively damaged.
